World-Class Music in Chattanooga

String Theory brings the world's most sought-after musicians to the Hunter Museum of American Art — now presenting Season XVIII.

Our Mission

Great music, heard up close.

String Theory is a chamber music series bringing the world's best chamber music to downtown Chattanooga at the Hunter Museum of American Art.

Offering superb musical performances in an artistically inspiring setting, String Theory brings the most sought-after musicians to Chattanooga and curates exquisite programming that includes chamber-music classics as well as the music of our time.

Presenting intimate music in a museum setting has long been a treasured tradition at institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. These one-hour concerts — with their unique synergy of music, art, and audience — have become a signature of String Theory, adding to the vibrancy of Chattanooga’s cultural fabric.

Founded in 2009 by pianist Gloria Chien, String Theory aspires to expose new audiences to chamber music, invigorate the local classical-music scene, and cultivate a future generation of music lovers.
